Rickshaw fares rise to Rs. 15 minimum

Mangalore August 28: DC V. Ponnuraj has announced that the minimum fare of auto rickshaws has been raised to Rs. 15 following the regional transport authority meeting convened in the DC’s office on Aug 28, Saturday. The fare for every kilometer after the minimum limit has been raised to Rs. 11, he said and added that the revision will be brought into effect from September 10.

The DC told that the auto rickshaw fares were last revised in 2008 and the minimum fare was fixed at Rs. 13 with Rs. 9 for every extra kilometer after the minimum limit. Since then, prices of essential commodities including diesel and petrol have been hiked, owing to which the auto rickshaw fare had to be raised.

 

 

 

 

He also announced that auto rickshaw meters will be calibrated by Oct 1; and on September 10, all auto rickshaws will receive the new rate cards. These cards will be valid till September 30; and the auto rickshaw meters will display Rs. 15 as the minimum charge from Oct 1, he informed.

There are no waiting charges for 15 minutes; however, 25 percent of the charges displayed on the meter will be charged as waiting fees for waiting periods between 15 and 45 minutes. The driver need not wait more than 45 minutes. The minimum will be raised 50 percent between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., he announced

The DC also announced that pre-paid auto rickshaw facilities will be introduced at Mangalore Central Railway Station and KSRTC bus stand. Moreover, the photos, names, and license numbers of the driver will be displayed on the rickshaw.

A number of topics such as auto rickshaw sharing, permitting rural rickshaws to enter city limits, number of children per school trip, raising parking rates, tourist and private cars, and so on were discussed during the meeting, which was attended by Seva Nayak of RTO; M. Mutturaya, the DCP of crime and traffic; Ramesh, the DCP of law and order; Ivan D’Souza, the president of MCC Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Association; and representatives of several other auto rickshaw associations.
