Mangalore, January 30: The Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA) conferred the Fr. Luis Carreno Award 2011 on veteran journalist Dr. Ronald Anil Fernandes on Jan 29, Saturday on the occasion of the 17th national conference of the ICPA, held at Shanthi Kiran, Pastoral Centre.
Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, conferred the award on Mr. Fernandes, who is currently the Mangalore Bureau chief of the “Deccan Herald.” Mr. Fernandes has bagged this award for his contributions to journalism.
Affectionately called Ronnie by fans and colleagues, Mr. Fernandes was the first journalist in South India to bag the Sarojini Naidu National Award 2009 for best reporting on women in Panchayat Raj in the English category.
The ICPA also conferred awards on two more writers. M. Vincent, the editor of two Tamil magazines on Dalit issues in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, won the Best Reportage on SC/ST and BC Award, and Prof. S. Vincent, a writer based in Madurai, received the Tamil Catholic Writers Award.
Each ICPA award comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cheque for Rs. 10,000.
ICPA President Fr. Adolf Washington delivered the welcome address and divulged information regarding the ICPA and its awards. The conference was supported by the department of mass communication of St. Aloysius College, Canara Communication Centre, Mangalore, and Raknno Konkani Weekly.
Two technical sessions were conducted by Hariprasad Nadiga of sampada.net, Meera of “Citizen Matters,” Fr. Joshi of Teenager, Mumbai, and Fr. Harris of DBICA, Chennai after the inauguration ceremony.
