Mangaluru, Nov 09, 2023: The Department of Intelligent Computing and Business Systems (ICBS) of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor, Chair in Christianity, Mangalore University and Commission for Social Communication, Diocese of Mangalore jointly organised a symposium on “Disruptive Technologies and Their Impact on Our Future” on November 09, 2023, at SJEC campus in Vamanjoor.
The symposium aimed to create awareness and understanding of the emerging technologies that are transforming the world and the challenges and opportunities they pose for humanity.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, the Director of SJEC presided the inaugural program. Dr Shreenath Acharya, HOD of Dept of ICBS, Rev. Fr Anil Fernandes, Diocesan secretary of Commission for Social Communication, Rev. Dr Ivan D’Souza, Head of Chair in Christianity, Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC and Dr Roshan Fernandes, Professor of Nitte Engineering College also were on the stage.
The symposium was inaugurated by Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, the Director of SJEC, who stressed the need to harness the power of disruption while taming its ethical implications. He said, “As custodians of the future, we must navigate uncharted territory with a compass calibrated by principles of justice, fairness and human dignity.”
The symposium featured two eminent speakers, Dr Rio D’Souza, Professor of SJEC, and Dr Roshan Fernandes, Professor of Nitte Engineering College, Karkala, who enlightened the participants on various topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Quantum Computing, Blockchain, New Generation Genomics, The Internet of Things, Web 3.0, Augmented/Virtual Reality, Metaverse, Digital Twins, and Cybersecurity. They also discussed the current trends, applications, and implications of these technologies in various domains and sectors.
The symposium was attended by around 200 participants, including faculty, students, researchers, seminarians, priests, nuns and professionals from various fields and backgrounds. The symposium also provided an opportunity for networking and collaboration among the participants and the speakers to further enhance their knowledge on the topic.
