Mangalore, Aug 7: S M. Sayed Khaleed, the chairman of the Bhatkal-based Anjuman Group of Institutions said that material education and spiritual education cannot be separated because they are two sides of the same coin. He was the guest of honour at the inaugural ceremony of Coastal Muslim Educational Conference 2010, organized by Hidayah Foundation at IMA Hall on Aug 7, Saturday.
Quoting from the Quran, he said that Allah granted the prophet superiority over others by granting him knowledge and not guidance. Despite the fact that the Quran attaches a lot of importance to knowledge, Muslims are backward in several areas of life because of their tendency to neglect material education.
He explained that, at the beginning of the Islamic era, the Muslim community was aware of the importance of knowledge and education and worked hard to spread it throughout the world; but later the community forgot the significance of knowledge and became a backward community in several areas of life. Owing to this, the once intelligent and renowned community has now become a backward community, he lamented.
He urged the Muslim community to work hard to achieve its former glory by receiving modern education and stressed that spiritual education and material education must receive equal importance.
