Subrahmanya : After Shashti, it is garbage galore in pilgrim centre

Subrahmanya Dec 24, 2012 : If the Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple, one of the famous pilgrim shrines of the district, was flocked by thousands of devotees during the recent Shashti celebrations, now that the festival is over, the cleanliness staff find it a daunting task to clean up the surroundings full of litter.
During the Shashti festivities, apart from the existing shops and commercial establishments, many more temporary stalls too had come up to meet the growing demand of the increasing number of devotees.
Naturally, this has also generated enough wastes including ice cream cups, soft drink bottles, plastic spoons, covers, cigarette butts, supari packets etc etc.

It indeed has become a daunting task for the temple management as well as the gram panchayat to dispose the garbage collected in the pilgrim centre after every festival.
The Sullia TMC had deputed 15 municipal workers towards cleanliness works during the festival. Apart from these, the Subrahmanya Gram Panchayat has a mini tempo and two other workers. It is learnt, this year a record garbage of 20 loads has been collected.
The citizens of this pilgrim shrine strongly feel that the problem can be reduced to a great extent if garbage bins are placed at several points so that devotees can throw the wastes in these drums instead of discarding them on roadsides.
Locals feel such a step can be taken during the next festival with the co-operation of the temple management, local Gram Panchayat and several youth organizations.
