Khader entered the Assembly for the first time by winning the 2007 by-election held following the death of his father. Since then he won four times from Mangaluru constituency. He served as minister for health, housing, and civil supplies under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

In Karnataka 2018 state election, Khader was the only congress MLA to win the election in Dakshina kannada.

Khader said it is his utmost privilege and honour to be appointed as Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the legislative assembly.

Khader’s appointment is being seen as a move by the Congress to conciliate the Muslim community, ahead of the Assembly polls in 2023, party sources said.
