Udupi: Leopard rescued after falling into well in Padubidri

Udupi, November 23, 2024: A three-year-old male leopard that accidentally fell into a well in Santhoor near Mudarangadi, Padubidri, was successfully rescued by forest department personnel on Friday.

The leopard had fallen into the well situated in the yard of Lakkadakatta Karunkara Poojary’s residence. Around 11 a.m., Karunakar discovered the trapped animal when he went to fetch water and promptly alerted the local gram panchayat and forest officials.

Forest department personnel arrived in the afternoon equipped with a cage and carried out a rescue operation. The leopard was safely extricated from the well and later released into the reserve forest near Kollur. The incident drew a crowd of curious onlookers from the neighborhood.

Reports suggest that the leopard had been chased by a family the previous night after attempting to prey on a domestic dog. It is believed to have fallen into the well while pursuing a cat. Local residents noted that leopards and wild bison frequently roam the area, causing fear among the community.


The rescue operation was led by forest officials. local residents were also present during the operation.
