Udupi district administration offers support to run the new endosulfan rehab centre in Udupi district

Udupi, January 13, 2025: Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari said the district administration will help Hosabelaku Seva Trust in running of the endosulfan rehabilitation centre, which is being built in Bailuru of Karkala taluk of Udupi district.

Foundation stone was laid on Sunday for construction of three-floor centre . The trust has planned to look after 150 bedridden women endosulfan victims.

There are a total of 1800 endosulfan victims in Udupi district who are receiving monthly honorarium. As many as 1,200 victims with disability of more than 60% who are getting monthly honorarium of ₹4,000 and around 600 victims with disability between 20% and 60% who are receiving monthly honorarium of ₹2,000. Of the 1,200 victims, there are about 250 women who are bed ridden and their family members are facing problem in taking care of these victims.

Talking to media, Ms. Vidyakumari said district administration has proposed to the State government for granting of funds to the trust, to run the centre.  It is also looking for corporate social responsibility funds to take care of bedridden endosulfan victims. There are no day care centres for endosulfan victims. The victims are receiving physiotherapy services through mobile health care units and at the Primary Health Centres, she said.

The trust has planned to complete construction of the ground floor of the centre by June and accommodate 50 bed ridden women victims. In a year’s time, the trust has planned to complete construction of the remaining two floors and accommodate 100 victims. The trust has planned to set up a committee of experts, including government doctors, for selecting victims who can be taken care at the new centre.

Managing Trustee of Trust Tanula Tarun, president Human Rights Protection Foundation Ravindranath Shanbhogue and other members of the trust  took part in the foundation laying ceremony on Sunday.
