The heroes of the Indo-Pak War of 1971 and the Bangladesh War were remembered on this occasion. Dec 16, 1971 is a day of historic significance because around 90,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini. This war, which killed around 3 million people, led to the birth of Bangladesh.

Addressing the gathering, the police commissioner said that the police department will extend all cooperation to rehabilitate ex-servicemen and to work for their welfare. Speaking in appreciation of the important role played by soldiers in ensuring peace and law and order within the country, he said that the tension at the borders is high at present owing to hostile nations such as Pakistan and that the armed forces are doing everything within their power to protect people and ensure safety and security. He also said that functions will be held in the Kadri Police Station premises from next year in a bid to strengthen the bonds between the police and the public.

Mangalore City Corporation Commission Dr. Vijayaprakash said that the Vijay Diwas is indeed auspicious and urged people to mull over how society should pay back the invaluable services of people in the army, navy, and air force. He also vowed that he will make Mangalore one of the leading corporations in India with the citizens’ cooperation, adding that top priority will be given to the renovation of the Veera Yodhara Smaraka and the statue of Shrinivas Mallya.
