Water level at Thumbe dam falls

Mangaluru, Mar 11, 2017: The level of water at Thumbe vented dam, that supplies drinking water to the city, has fallen from its present maximum storage level of 5 m to 4.5 m in a week, after inflow of water from the Netravati to the dam came to a halt, according to water supply officials at Mangaluru City Corporation.

Disagreeing with the recent statement of the commissioner of the corporation that storage at Thumbe and at AMR Power Pvt. Ltd.’s dam at Shambhoor would be enough for 132 days, the officials said it would be enough for only 75 to 80 days.

They said that about 200 MLD (million litres a day) of water was being used daily, including by the corporation, Mangalore University for its campus, Bantwal town municipality and farmers.

They said the Shambhoor dam was full with 6.25 m storage. MRPL and SEZL continued to draw water from Shambhoor. In addition, farmers on the upstream too drew water though inflow to Shambhoor has not completely stopped.

They said that out of about 160 MLD of water pumped to the city daily from Thumbe, about 40 MLD was lost between Padil and Thumbe. There are at least 50 illegal connections on the main pipelines.
