Yogish Bhat is deputy speaker

January 11, 2011: Mangalore South BJP MLA Yogish N Bhat was elected unopposed as deputy speaker of the assembly on Monday.
 

The post has been lying vacant for more than a year after K G Bopaiah was elevated as speaker in December 2009 soon after Jagadish Shettar resigned from the post to join Yeddyurappa’s cabinet.

The election, however, hasn’t gone down well with opposition parties. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah said the calender of events was announced when the case on disqualification of 16 MLAs is in court.
