ZP/TP Election: Popular leaders fail to make it in DK

Mangalore, Jan 5: Some of the leaders who were sure to win, failed to make it to the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, thus upsetting the calculations of political leaders.

While Zilla Panchayat former vice president Shalet Pinto (Cong) lost to Sucharitha Shetty’s wife Sunitha Shetty (BJP) in Puttige, Pramodh Kumar (Cong) who had done commendable work in his constituency lost to Eshwar Kateel (BJP). Both the leaders had to contest from other constituencies due to reservation factor in their own constituency.

Similarly, sitting ZP member Krishna Amin (Cong) lost to Janardhan Gowda (BJP), the first member from Kudubi community to make it to Zilla Panchayat.

In Neermarga, Taluk Panchayat former president Gokuldas Shetty (BJP) lost to new face Melwyn D’Souza (Cong).

Congress heavy weight A C Bhandary (Cong) lost to Santhosh Kumar Rai of the BJP by a narrow margin of 118 votes. While Bhandary polled 8,149 votes, Rai managed to secure 8,267 votes. Other popular candidates who could not make it include Abdul Azeez Malar (JD(S)), who lost to N S Kareem (Cong) in Konaje and G Sadananda Malli (BJP) who lost to Prakash Shetty in Golthamajal, thus saving Ramanath Rai’s face in his area.

Another former ZP vice president Rajashree S Hegde (JD(S)) managed to secure only 2,795 votes, pushing herself to the third place. Winner Devaki Sanjeeva Gowda (BJP) polled 8,711 votes While Umavathi Dejappa Gowda (Cong) polled 7,164 votes.

Venkat Dambekodi (BJP) too lost to Devraj K S (Cong) in Gutthigaru.
