‘Best social worker’ award for Puttur woman

Mangalore, Sep 11, 2014: Aruna, a motivator at the continuing education centre at Beeriga Bannur in Puttur taluk, who has been empowering women by bringing about social changes, has been selected for the ‘Best social worker’ award instituted by Directorate of Loka Shikshana/State Literacy Mission, reports DHNS from Mangalore.

The award will be conferred at a programme to mark World Literacy Day at Bangalore, on September 12. The award will be presented by Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar.

In 1990-91, she plunged into the ‘Sampoorna Saksharatha Andholan’ and educated as many as 125 illiterates from the village.  After the literacy campaign ended, she continued with Continuing Education Centre by imparting informal education to women in specific, organising them, forming Self Help Groups, informing them about various government programmes and MGNREGS.
