Oct 28, 2017: The Kotathattu Gram Panchayat and the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Foundation will host a one-day sports and cultural fest, titled ‘Holapu – 2017’, for members of rural and urban local bodies of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts tomorrow, Oct 29. Sunday. It will be held at Kota in Udupi district.
At a press conference, Pramod Hande, president of the GP, said nearly 4,000 members of rural and urban local bodies are expected to participate. Nearly 160 physical education teachers will take part as referees.
The events scheduled at the fest include tug-of-war, shot put, 100-m race, throwball, ring-in-the-wicket, singing, fancy dress and quiz. The day will start with the sports torch being brought from the Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth Theme Park to Viveka High School, the venue of the fest, at 7.30 a.m. This will be followed by a parade by members of 270 gram panchayats at 8.30 a.m.
H.K. Patil, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister, will inaugurate the event. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation; Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports; B. Ramanath Rai, Minister for Forests and Environment; U.T. Khadar, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies; and Eshwar Khandre, Minister for Municipal Administration, are expected to be guests at the function.
The fest is being held for the second straight year. It is also being held as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of the late writer Shivaram Karanth, Hande said.
Dinakar Babu, president of the zilla panchayat, and Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLC, released T-shirts and caps for the fest at the press meet. Nalini P. Rao, president of Udupi Taluk Panchayat, was present.
