Mangalore, June 8, 2013: Ananth Naik, State President of Students Federation of India has accused the state government of bowing to pressure from private schools in the name of RTE by providing relaxation in rules.
Participating in a meeting held on June 7, Friday to discuss RTE and its implementation in the district, said the government should not resort to such acts and instead ensure that each child is guaranteed quality education.
He said the state government was spending as much as Rs 11,840 per poor student who is admitted to a private school under RTE quota while other state governments were not spending more than Rs 5000 per student. The government was thus giving more to private institutions while neglecting government schools, he alleged.
On the issue of closure of as many as 10,000 government schools during the tenure of BJP government for want of students, Ananth Naik said presently there were nearly one lakh children who are not going to schools and the closed schools can be opened if the one lakh students are encouraged to go to schools.
Renni D’Souza, education activist, said steps have not yet been taken to effectively implement RTE in the district.
Muneer Katipalla, District President of DYFI and others were present.
