Mangalore, July 24, 2014: As per reports, the D K DC has officially made it mandatory for ’application and document writers’ who work at the D C office gate not to take more than Rs 2 from the public for each application. The decision was a lightening bolt to the application writers who supended their work and rotested on July 22.
A banner put at the spot directs public not to pay more that Rs 2. Speaking to media persons, Dakshina Kannada Dasthaveju haagu Arji Barahagaarara Sangha Member Damodar, an elderly person said: “Taking bribe can be the norm in sub registrar offices, we get just Rs 10 to Rs 20 per application. We may get 15 to 20 customers per day. If it is two rupees per application, how can I manage to survive?” Karnataka Rajya Dasthaveju haagu Arji Barahagaarara Sangha State Secretary Vittal Bhandary Harekala said: “ Rate of Rs 2 exists nowhere in the State. As far as we know the public have not raised any objection. All of a sudden, without warning they (district administration) has put up a banner. This labour has given employment to 17 educated unemployed here and most of them are now senior citizens. This decision is very inhuman,” he said and recalled that former DC Ponnuraj had promised a shelter for writers in Mangalore. Vittal Bhandary Harekala said that request has been submited to Assistant Commissioner to reconsider the matter.
However, on July 23 the district administration increased the fee from Rs 2 to Rs 5 per application. The banner which read ‘Rs 2 per application’ has been modified.
