’Double permit’ common, city autos complain.

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru: Speaking to the media, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rickshaw Unit President Arun Kumar has alleged that Auto Rickshaw drivers of the City are facing injustice as transport department is issuing city permit to rural applicants. He also said the department is issuing double or more permits, against the norms.

He also stated that according to information collected through RTI - Right to Information Act, in March 26, 2015, City auto permits should be issued only those within Mangalore City Corporation limits. However, the department has issued 45 city permits to Ullal, two each to Moodbidri, Adyar Kannur and Neermarga and 40 permits to Mukka which are outside MCC limits.  A person who is abroad got the permit. However, the RTO says that he is helpless when applications are recommended by MLAs and MPs.  Though Regional Traffic Authority (RTA) meeting on March 12, 2015, in the presence of Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader had directed the rural auto drivers to paint their auto rickshaws with green colour if they want to enter the city, it is yet not implemented.

Arun Kumar said, that he collected more than 35 examples of double permits in City. Though the DK DC   had promised of a campaign to check double permit, it has not been done. Except fine, no stringent action is being taken against rural auto rickshaw drivers. Even now, they charge minimum of Rs 30 in rural areas, while traffic jams increase in City and there are more than 10 signals.  A memorandum was submitted to Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim in this regard recently.

The DC has referred the case to RTO. The auto drivers decided to fight against the injustice in the  court of law. When auto rickshaw charge increases by a rupee it is considered as injustice, but nobody bothers about the price rice and injustice going on in other departments, he added.  The Forum Vice President Chandra Hegde, Treasurer Raja M Salian, Member Abdul Rahiman and others were present.
