Mangaluru, June 1, 2015 : As per reports a senior journalist Shekhar Gupta speaking at the presentation of the annual Soorya Mitra Awards to Fr. Maria Julian, director of Chitra Don Bosco, Chitradurga, and Arjun Menda, trustee of Menda Foundation, Bengaluru, for their contribution in promotion of solar energy solutions in rural Karnataka. He emphasised  that the availability of affordable and reliable power can help reduce inequality in the country.

The awards were instituted by Selco Solar Light Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, and founded by Magsaysay Award winner Harish Hande.  Journo  Gupta said the country was reeling under a massive power shortage owing to power infrastructure and losses in transmission and distribution.

Unlike in the past, people now have greater needs and aspirations. They need access to good education, job opportunities and quality healthcare. Though Bihar is a water-rich State, it could not be used as farmers had no access to electricity. Solar power has a lot of potential, which is yet to be properly tapped in the country  Gupta said.

Magsaysay Award winner Harish Hande  who presided at the function said that India should be the centre for knowledge and solutions. It has become  necessary to put in place innovations and solutions for the at least  40 per cent people living below the poverty line. It is vital to create a sustainable models of development and an inclusive society.
