Udupi, Sep 13. 2015 : Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ’World Suicide Prevention Day’ organized by the Legal Services Authority, Udupi district in association with the District Administration; District and Sessions judge Shivshankar Amarannavar said, the Indian Constitution has guaranteed the right to life for all and no human has the right to end life or snatch away others’lives.

The social responsibility of all is to guide and protect the depressed people and show them the right path. Renowned psychiatrist Dr P V Bhandari said alcohol has a major role in the suicide cases, as the person under the influence of alcohol could take any extreme step. About 33 per cent of suicides occur when the person is under the influence of alcohol. People around the person, who makes an attempt to suicide should be more cautious as the risk involved will be more in such cases. The person should be kept under constant vigil at least for a year as 50 per cent of those who fail in their attempts, try again.

Adoloscents are the most likely to be affected, by love affairs, adverse life experiences, biological factors, depression and other factors. The problems of family miscommunications, school related issues and chronic pains may also provoke the person to end life. The decision to end life will be momentary and the person would backtrack, if properly guided and and counselled.

The person should be supported by his/her family members and friends to stand by him at difficult times. Teachers can be good counsellors for the students and even many police officers have saved families. Police officials should also be trained in counselling as they are the part of the issues concerning an offence.

Stating that media reports regarding suicides and deaths do have impact on the mindset of people, he said the suicide cases are sensitive and media reports should not highlight the way the suicide is committed. This would help the weak minded know more different ways and provoke them.
