1000-page encyclopedia on indigenous farming being prepared

Mangalore, Oct 22, 2012 : Addressing the gathering at a seminar on indigenous farming sciences held at Pavanje on Oct 20, Sunday, Prof. Ambalike Hiriyanna, vice chancellor of Karnataka Janapada University, said that an encyclopedia on indigenous agricultural sciences is being prepared in six South Indian languages.

Revealing further details, he said that the encyclopedia will have 1000 pages, adding that 50 articles on indigenous farming methods are already ready.

The event was held on a boat on River Nandini in Pavanje.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. R. V. S. Sundaram, a language expert, said that, although the size of vegetables is huge in America, they are tasteless. He expressed his opinion that yield can be increased if vegetables are grown using indigenous farming methods.

Prof. S. C. Ramesh, registrar of Janapada University, said that the encyclopedia will have pictures related to indigenous farming technology, adding that these pictures will be preserved in a digital format.

Speaking about traditional farming methods, Dr. Vaman Nandavar, folklore expert, said that the agricultural sector is affected by lack of farmers.

MLA Abhayachandra Jain acknowledged the efforts of former chief minister Devraj Urs in improving the condition of farmers and making the tillers owners of the land.

Speaking on the occasion, Harikrishna Punaroor, former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishad, said that it is the need of the hour to increase paddy cultivation.

Umanath V. Kotian, president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy; entrepreneur G. Bangera; and Prof. John D’Silva, vice principal of St. Aloysius College; were also present.
