Mangalore, Apr 5: A team, under the leadership of Ravichandra Nayak, tahsildar of Mangalore, organized a raid in several places at Yekkur in Bajpe and its surrounding areas on April 3, Saturday. Bajpe police registered 11 illegal mining cases following the raid.
The tahsildar had received several complaints, owing to which he had conducted the raid. The tahsildar had filed a report against Eshwar, Gangadhar, and Krishna a couple of weeks ago after learning that three of their laterite stone quarries were illegal.
The team, which comprised Pramod, the house officer of Bajpe station, and other police personnel, raided laterite mining quarries in Permude, Yekkur, Machchoor, Tenka Yedapadavu, Mooduperara, and others and discovered that many of them were illegal. The police have registered cases on grounds of damaging public property, violation of the revenue act and other offences.
Some more raids will be conducted soon because dozens of illegal mines are being operated in Bajpe alone; and only two of them have the permission to perform the mining.
Allegedly, the political rivalry between the Congress and the BJP are responsible for all these complaints filed against illegal mining activities.
