May 29: The residents of Karike are terrified of dengue after one person died of gastroenteritis in South Kodagu.

A total of 15 people were admitted to the hospital in Kerala and Mangalore because of fever. Of these, two were diagnosed with dengue.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Shivaram Naik confirmed that two people in Karike seem to be having dengue. He also said that a team of health officials have been camping in the area since 3 days. Doctors from Bhagamandala and Napoklu have been deputed to Karike and health officials are visiting every home to do a health check up. The health department opined that the unhygienic condition of the villages was increasing the risk of contracting dengue.

Rajiv, the member of the Zilla Panchayat; Sudhir, the member of the Gram Panchayat; Ramachandra; and Chengappa visited the houses and hospitals yesterday and urged the health departments of Kodagu and Kerala to discuss ways of curbing and eliminating the disease.
