24 men arrested on gambling charge

Mangalore, Oct 13, 2014: The police on Saturday night arrested 24 men and seized cash, valuables and vehicles after a raid on a resort at Nidle, Belthangady taluk.

After stumbling upon the activities at the resort during night rounds, a special police team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Bantwal) Rahul Kumar, raided the resort and found 30 men indulging in various forms of gambling.

A sum of Rs. 11.29 lakh in cash, 13 mobile phones, 38 alcohol bottles and nine vehicles were seized in the raid, the police said.

S.D. Sharanappa, Superintendent of Police, said this was one of the largest gambling raids conducted in the district.

Meanwhile, six persons were arrested by the Belthangady police on the charge of gambling the same evening.

The police said Rs. 17,600 in cash, a motorcycle and an autorickshaw were seized.

Theft

A sum of Rs. 7,000 in cash and gold ornaments weighing 44 grams were said to be stolen from the house of a businessman at Bolangadi, Bantwal taluk, early on Sunday morning.

According to the Bantwal Town Police, P.P. Abdul Aziz, a heavy machinery equipment store owner, who had gone on his morning walk between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., returned to see that the cash and gold ornaments were stolen.
