Kundapur, Jan 1, 2014: Three men have been arrested in connection with the case of robbing hawala cash amounting to Rs 36 lakhs from a shopkeeper in Bhatkal. Those arrested are Ravi alias Ravichandra (34) of Uppunda, Irfan and Ilahid of Hemmadi. Meanwhile, search is on for three other accused in the case.
The incident had taken place on December 24 after a cash of Rs 36 lakh said to be hawala money was brought to Bhatkal from Bangalore in a government bus. The parcel containing cash was accepted by a shopkeeper in Bhatkal but the accused had reportedly threatened the shopkeeper and escaped with the cash.
A complaint was lodged with the Bhatkal police. The police have gathered information that hawala money from overseas used to continuously make an inflow into the country. Only a thorough enquiry will reveal as to whom the hawala money was being remitted in Bhatkal.
The three arrested persons on charges of robbery are also said to have been involved in various other cases in the past. If Ravichandra had once earlier been caught in a diamond smuggling case and a vehicle theft case. Ilahid, it is learnt, was wanted in connection with a bank robbery case in Gangolli. Another accused Irfan owned a shop at Chor Bazar and was also reportedly involved in smuggling.
