Mangaluru, Dec 14, 2015 : The 30th week of Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan was carried out by Ramakrishna Mission in St Agnes - Mallikatta area on Sunday from 7.30am to 10.30am. Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president, Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Mangalore and Padmanabha, former corporator flagged off the drive in the presence of Ganesh Karnik, MLC.
A group of Art of Living under Dr Shivaram and Sumana Kamath, students from government first Grade College under Mahesh K B, volunteers from Nivedita Balaga under Rathna Alva and Sheela Shetty, students of Vivekananda Coaching Centre under the leadership of Vijayalakshmi actively participated in the Abhiyan.
Volunteers cleaned roads and footpaths near St Agnes. Road leading from Agnes to Mallikatta was also cleaned. Heaps of garbage lying in the premises of Central library in Mallikatta was cleared. Construction debris like sand and jelly which had covered the road thus obstructing the path of pedestrians were removed.
Volunteers also cleaned two bus shelters, removed posters stuck on the walls, and painted the bus shelters thus giving a makeover to the shelters. Railings of shelter and platform in the shelters used by public were cleaned and painted.
A circle in front of Vas Bakery in St Agnes area was dilapidated and ignored. It was an eye sore for people using the road. The circle was cleaned off weeds and debris of garbage and railings were re-laid using cement and concrete and were painted. A display board having an outline of Mahatma Gandhi seen with a broom and cleaning the surroundings has been installed to motivate the onlookers along with the message for Swachh Mangaluru.
Two to three direction boards in the Bendoor church area that had faded and were no longer serving the purpose were cleaned and repainted thus giving a makeover. Volunteers also distributed handbills on Swachh Mangaluru Abhiyan to generate awareness among localites in the area. MRPL, Principal Patron of the event sponsored the drive.
