Mangalore, May 4: Officials of the Department of Mines and Geology and the police on Monday foiled an attempt to transport approximately four to five tonnes of sand illegally to Kerala by train.
According to Ravindra, Deputy Director of the department, some persons tried to transport sand by packing it in barrels and pasting fake labels of chemicals on them.
He said that someone had brought these barrels to an agency that books goods to be taken by train near the Mukhyaprana temple at Bunder in Mangalore north police limits. The agency authorities, who suspected foul play, did not book the consignment. They tipped off the police and the Department of Mines and Geology. On verification, it was found that the barrels contained sand.
“We seized 53 such barrels weighing between 80 kg and 90 kg each, as the sand was wet Culprits are yet to be traced,” he said.
