6,335 cases of dog bites in Udupi district since Jan

Udupi , Nov 12, 2014: District Health and Family Welfare Officer Ramachandra Bairy said on Tuesday that there have been 6,335 cases of dog bites in the district from January to October. He was speaking at a monthly Karnataka Development Programme meeting at the zilla panchayat here.

Dr. Bairy said that in the 6,335 cases of dog bites, two persons had died. A 30-year old man from Tellar near Karkala died after being bitten by a mad dog on January 20, while a 60-year-old man from Uppunda village near Kundapur died due to a mad dog bite on June 18. Both of them had reportedly failed to take treatment for the bites.

As many as 441 cases of dog bite have been reported in the district in October alone.

Already the Health Department had taken steps to control the breeding of stray dogs in urban areas of the district through Animal Birth Control measures.

M. Kangavalli, CEO of Zilla Panchayat directed Mr. Bairy to take the help of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences and Gram Panchayats to provide Anti Rabies Vaccines and to control the stray dogs in rural areas.
