Mangalore, April 19: Dr. Deepak Bolar, the malaria officer in Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), said that people can have a free blood test for malaria at six centres in Mangalore. The six centres provide the results within an hour and give medication free of cost. These centres are located on the first floor of the MCC building at Lalbagh, Lady Hill Circle, Bejai, Jeppu, Bunder, and the Government Wenlock Hospital. 

The doctor has warned people against self-medication for high fever. People are advised to use medicated mosquito nets, which paralyze mosquitoes coming in contact with them. The MCC had distributed 3000 medicated mosquito nets to hostels and construction workers in 2008. 

The MCC’s malaria control cell claims that 20,083 cases of malaria were reported in 2005. Next year, the cases of malaria dropped to 15,664; and in 2007, the number further reduced to 10,930. 

Dr. Bolar informs people that they must cooperate with the officials to bring malaria under control. Water should not be allowed to stand and stagnate in coconut shells, tins, tyres, flower pots, buckets, and others. Overhead tanks in buildings must be kept closed.
