Honnavar, May 13: Unidentified miscreants have attacked another church on the National Highway 17 in the Honnavar Police Station limits, Uttara Kannada district on May 12.
According Honnavar police, The incident came to light early in the morning today when people came in to worship, while it is suspected that the incident might have occurred in the previous night itself.
The glass encasing the idols of St. Joseph and St. Mary was found broken in the morning. It is said that stones were pelted on the glass. The local residents of the area stated that people from all the regions came to worship in the beautifully designed Holy Cross Church irrespective of their caste or creed.
The church is situated just opposite to the Honnavar police station, therefore the locals called the church as the police holy cross church. The police were immediately informed about the incident and Circle Police Inspector M Jagadish and PSI Govindraj T Dasari rushed to the spot for inspection.
Meanwhile, the in-charge Deputy Commissioner of Uttar Kannada district, Dr. K M Narasimah Murthi and Bhatkal Dy. SP Dr. Vedhamurthy visited the spot and assured the community leaders, of arresting the culprits.
The news created panic among people of the locality, the area turned tense; after which the church was provided with police security. Bhatkal DySp Dr. Vedamurthy clarified that the miscreants have taken an advantage of the GP elections to attack the church as the police were busy in the election duty.
