Mangalore, April 23: Aane Kere (Elephant Tank), a historic water body, has been extensively renovated and made fit to hold the waters of the 2010 monsoons. The state government commissioned the renovation work, which was entrusted to the minor irrigation department. Mr. Shivaram Shetty, a renowned contractor, has played a major role in the renovation of this tank.
Aane Kere, which sprawls over an area of 17 acres, is the largest water body in the state. The kings of the Bharavarasa dynasty constructed it in the 14th century. The royal elephants were brought to the tank for their bath. A smaller tank was built beside the large tank as a drain to the main tank. This smaller tank came to be known as “Sigidi Kere” for the sweet water prawns it houses.
Previous attempts to renovate the lake were miserable failures. This year, the chief minister awarded a contract worth Rs 89 lakh. The engineers, who are in charge of the renovation work, claim that they will transform the lake to its previous glory.
Nazeer, a local entrepreneur, plans to transform Aane Kere into a tourist spot. As soon as the engineers complete their work of renovating the lake, Nazeer will introduce boating into the area. He also plans to launch a campaign with the Karkala Town Municipality to keep the water body clean and transform it into a tourist spot.
