Advocates responsible for dignity of profession - Justice Byrareddy

Udupi, Dec 21, 2015 : Speaking after inaugurating free medical camp organised by the Udupi Bar Association, High Court Judge Justice Anand Byrareddy said the law  courts should function uninterrupted.

He said closures of the court during holidays stretching over many days is a matter of concern and those concerned should insure that the issues balance well with other general practices in this regard.

He added that society looks up at the institution for justice ensuring speedy trial and early disposal of cases. The advocates and others of judiciary should strive to give their best to the society. The long vacation has increased the rate of pending cases in courts, he said.

He said there is a need for a break. However, the break should be justified in terms of the service rendered. He added that a mechanism should be worked out to ensure that courts work continuously, at the same time guaranteeing a reasonable break to the judicial officers.

Calling upon the advocates to embark upon fruitful initiatives ensuring social causes, the High Court justice said that advocates should start thinking in terms of betterment of society, environment causes, disposal of wastes and other issues. Commitment towards the country is possible only when one starts thinking about the surroundings, he said.

Urging the advocates to uphold values that the profession is reputed for traditionally, Justice Byrareddy said advocates face challenges and said that they should be equipped with knowledge to uphold the dignity and respect of the profession.

Justice Pradeep D Waingankar said changing lifestyles   have resulted in massive air pollution, water contamination and food adulteration. The adverse affects should be dealt with on time to avoid worsening the matter, he said referring to health care cautions to be considered.

On the tendency of advocates to go on strike for unnecessary reasons disrupting the court proceedings, he said the dignity of the profession is decaying.

He added that the advocates agitate and misuse power, referring the recent protests by the advocates in Kalaburagi and Dharwad for nearly 15 days for the issues like setting up of KAT bench and Mahadayi water dispute respectively. Abstaining from court responsibility is not a good development, he said and added that the advocates should work towards improving the living conditions of the downtrodden.

Manipal University Pro-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal said eradication of illiteracy and ill health would help in the alleviation of poverty. Early detection of the disease would ensure well being he said.
