Mangaluru. June 3, 2015 : Inaugurating the World Milk Day organised by Dakshina Kannada Milk Union Ltd (DKMUL) in Mangaluru Dairy, Kulshekhar, Mangaluru on June 1; M P Nalin Kumar Kateel called for a change in the approach of farmers who consider agriculture just a business.
The MP stressed that agriculture is ’a way of life’ rather than a business, the MP Kateel said that farmers switch to other crops when they hear that others fetch better returns in the market place. There has been no consistency in crop cultivation in the agricultural region.
He said the dairy farming and agriculture compliment each other, milk union is contributing mainly to the economic empowerment of diary farmers in the region. In Dakshina Kannada, dairy farming has increased as compared to earlier. The district is now capable of producing milk which could fulfill the demands. He appreciated measures taken by DKMUL such as subsidies to farmers.... The Karnataka Milk Federation has been a link between producer, dealer and vendor.
MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik expressed need for new technology so as to match international methods. The farming patterns in the district are changing. Being dependent on other districts for cattle feed must be relooked at.
SCDCC Bank President M N Rajendrakumar assured of bringing down the commission charges towards the transactions of DKMUL with SCDCC, in order to benefit farmers. He said that a need to provide subsidy directly to the bank accounts of dairy farmers and to provide them with debit cards must be considered.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the agro waste based boiler at the diary. The boiler is capable of producing five tonnes of steam per hour.
SCDCC bank prez M N Rajendra Kumar inaugurated the new auditorium of the union. Selected dealers and vehicle staff were felicitated on the occasion. Mayor Jacitha Vijay Alfred was the guest and DKMUL President Raviraj Hegde presided over the programme. Free milk and fruits was distributed by DKMUL to the patients of district Wenlock hospital, Lady Goschen hospital and the children of Shishumandira of Bhagini Sevashrama in Jeppu.
