Mangalore, May 23: 26-year-old Sujatha Survase, who hails from Andheri, has flown in and out of the Mangalore International airport several times. Her Facebook entry of 10 days back reads as follows: “Diversion + Delay + KWI Sector = Quick Death.” Her deadly prediction appears to have come true because she is one of the 158 who lost their lives when the Boeing 747 from Dubai to Mangalore overshot the runway and plunged into the valley beyond.
Survase is reported to have said that she “hates KWI sector,” adding that she was “scheduled for this sector” in her entire roster and that owing to “unfavourable weather conditions,” all they are “left with is the diversion and no layovers.”
Sujatha’s grieving family says that the air hostess was terrified of the runway at Mangalore. Sujatha is reported to have said that the Mangalore runway is dangerous and that she and her room mates used to pray for a safe landing whenever their plane had to land at Mangalore Airport.
Many others have commented about the safety of the runway at Mangalore International airport, which is surrounded by deep gorges. A number of people feel that the crash is because of the table-top runway. However, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, the former civil aviation minister, begs to differ. He says that the 8,000ft runway of the Mangalore Airport is larger than that of the Patna Airport, adding that Mangalore is not the only table-top airport in India. He also pointed out that Shimla, Kochi, Kulu, Mysore, and Meghalaya also have table-top runways.
