Mangalore, July 6, 2014: A Unani clinic at Azizudeen road at Bunder (Mangalore old port) which was closed for the last two years owing to lack of Unani doctors, was reopened on July 3. The clinic is now expected to function for the benefit of those interested. According to knowledgeable sources this Unani clinic has a history of at least a century.

The Ayush department has appointed two part time Unani doctors, Dr Vishwanath and Dr Ashfaq Hussain to serve the sick. Dr Vishwanath told the media on the side lines of the inauguration that the clinic will offer free treatment and medicine to the patients. Unani clinics normally receive cases of chronic illness like arthritis, paralysis and diabetes. The clinic will function four days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from 3 pm to 5 pm.

The Bundar area is base to the labour class, the clinic was very useful to them in the past  including women and children from the neighbourhood. It had good use to local people in its hey days. Abdul Rasheed, a resident of Bunder who filed a public petition demanding the reopening of the Unani clinic said that closure of the clinic had caused inconvenience to the general public who were approaching the clinic to get treated for various diseases. The clinic was established 119 years ago and there have been no Unani doctors since six years. Though Ayurvedic doctors used to treat for sometime, eventually the clinic was shut down.

The clinic has been renovated at a cost of Rs 3.47 lakh funded by the Mangalore City Corporation. Two more Unani clinics function in MCC limits including one at Kasaba Bengre and another at Kerekad in Mulki.

Mayor Mahabala Marla inaugurated the Unani clinic.
