Areca disease : ZP Chief directs officials to submit report within 20 days

Mangalore, Aug 14, 2013 :  Zilla Panchayat President Koragappa Naik has directed the officials of the Departments of Agriculture and Horticulture to submit a comprehensive report on areca crop loss due to Kole disease within the next 20 days.

Participating in the 13th General Meeting of the Zilla Panchayat on August 13, Tuesday, the ZP Chief  gave the above instructions after several members drew the attention of the House towards the plight of the areca growers who are reeling under problems due to the  kole disease that has afflicted the cops owing to  heavy rains since three months. They also demanded that a comprehensive report  be submitted so that compensation could be sanctioned.

The ZP chief also said the growers are in a confusion over the use of pesticides  to fight the disease,  and  added  they need the expert guidance from  Agricultural Research Centres.

Tulasi Maddineni, ZP Chie Executive Officer, who was also present at the meeting  assured to solve the confusion over the implementation of the Basava housing Scheme in the district, within the next three months. She said  a proposal would be submitted to the government to raise the maximum amount that could be spent under the scheme for a house from the existing Rs 4.5 lakhs to Rs  6 lakhs.
