Mangalore, May 3: A group of army men and the local people of Panambur almost came to blows on Sunday at the beach. The Panambur Beach Development Project authorities, however, prevented the issue from getting out of hand.
The army personnel had arrived to conduct a recruitment rally at Mangala Stadium; however 40 of them, who had arrived at the beach, allegedly created a nuisance and annoyed the people of the locality.
The Panambur Beach Development Project Chief Yatish Bykampady said that one of the army men had beaten up a lifeguard in the morning. The army men returned that afternoon and went into the water although the lifeguards instructed them not to do so. When the army men taunted the lifeguards, they began beating up an army man with the help of local people. Yatish said that the army men were speaking Tamil, which led to a communication gap between the two groups.
The army men have been frequently visiting the beach in recent days. On Friday, some of them had demanded Jet Ski rides at lower rates; but the project personnel in charge had flatly refused.
