Mangalore, Oct 5,2017: A release from NMPT here said that increase in handling of coal, iron ore for KIOCL, LPG, cement, and other commodities has contributed to the growth in traffic. The Port has also achieved 14.76% growth in container traffic by handling 50,696 TEUs in first six months of 2017-18 as against 44,176 TEUs handled in the corresponding period of 2016-17.
New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has registered 11.72 % growth in handling cargo during the first half-year of 2017-18 when compared to the relevant period during the last fiscal. The port handled 19.54 million tonnes of cargo this first half-year as against 17.49 million tonnes during the first half-year of the last fiscal.
At the same time, the port has achieved a 14.76 % growth in container traffic too.
It handled 50,696 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU) of containers in the first half-year of this fiscal as against 44,176 TEU handled during the first half-year of the last fiscal.
The present trend in cargo handling indicates that the port could mark handling of 40 million tonnes of cargo during the current financial year, the release said.
In-charge Chairman Suresh P. Shirwadkar congratulated the port staff, workers, trade union leaders, trustees and port users for the overall growth.
