Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 16, 2014:: Nalin Kumar Kateel alias Nalin Kumar Niranjan Shetty, Mangalores BJP sitting MP has defeated veteran Congress candidate and former Central Minister B Janardhan Poojary by about 1.45 lakh votes.

He was a first time contestant in the last Lok Sabha election in 2009. The general view is that it was an expected result. He maintained a steady lead from the word go of counting at Bondel, Mangalore. This Lok Sabha constituency is made up of Beltangady, Mangalore city north, Mangalore city south, Mangalore, Moodbidri, Bantwal, Puttur, and Sullia legislative assembly constituencies, with a cosmopolitan mix of people.

Kateel, 38 years old, apart from the Congress’s Poojary, also faced M R Vasudeva of AAP and Haneef Khan of SDPI, which was supported by JDS in this election, among others.  Nalin Kumar Kateel secured the BJP ticket in view of his long and active association with the RSS and his services to the BJP in several capacities through his service. Also, his first term has not been disappointing in a way.

It is clear that no great change was created by the other parties in this region. Nalin Kumar has earned a good reputation as an active and fair MP and it is hoped not only will this victory take him to greater heights but will contribute in a stellar way to bring special place to this hub of  India culture and history.

Most of the media had concluded that educated youth, especially first time voters, had turned up at polling in large numbers to exercise their franchise in this constituency.  Dakshina Kannada constituency had marked highest poll percentage of  77.18, this had given rise to lot of speculations. But, the public will has prevailed in a fair election with information well disbursed through modern means.

This victory it is hoped will go a long way in helping the development of Mangalore. The focus has been without doubt "The Modi" phenomena and is welcomed by the district and region which has for long been a BJP strong hold due to it’s history and Dravidian culture of ancient vintage.
