Puttur, may 14, 2015 : Reports indicate the membership of Puttur CMC President Nellikatte Jagadish Shetty and six others people was cancelled, following their defection to BJP, CMC Vice President Jeevandhar Jain, who is from BJP, has been made the in-charge President. The Congress had come to power in the CMC after winning in 15 wards, out of 27 wards. But, internal differences in the party resulted in rebel politics and seven members from Congress joined BJP.
This is the second instance where the internal clashes and fights for power, among Congress party smoothened the way for BJP, in taking over the administration of Puttur CMC. Vani Shridhar, of Congress, was an aspirant for the President’s post and rebelled against the party and contested with the support of BJP. Her CMC membership was canceled, as per anti- defection law. During the next elections, Jagadish Shetty was denied an opportunity, to contest in the election and he too, rebelled against Congress and joined BJP, with the support of other five members from Congress.
Now, membership of these six members has also been withdrawn. This has resulted in the strength of Congress decreasing to eight. While, the BJP, which already had a strength of 12 members has come in to power. In spite of issuing whip during the last two elections, the efforts of Congress failed in making H Muhammed Ali as the CMC President.
When membership of Vani Shridhar was cancelled during the last term Jeevandhar Jain from BJP had been the in-charge President of CMC. After the membership of Jagadish Shetty has been cancelled, Jain has been handed over the responsibility of CMC in-charge President for the second term. Muhammed Ali, who had faced defeat in CMC elections twice, has won the legal battle. Internal clashes in Congress party are now a boon for BJP.
Several City Municipal Council members, belonging to Congress, burst firecrackers and distributed sweets in front of Puttur CMC, to celebrate the disqualification of rebel Congress members, who lost their memberships as per anti-defection law. Puttur Block Congress former President Kavu Hemnath Shetty said that the rebel Congressmen deserved it as they have been unfaithful to the party. They have lost reputation within the party as well as before the people of their respective wards, he said.
