Mangaluru, Nov 17, 2015 : BIRD - Bankers Institute of Rural Development Mangaluru, observed its 32nd Foundation Day Nov 16, at NABARD premises in Bondel.

Speaking on the occasion, Zilla Panchayat CEO P I Sreevidya lauded NABARD for its involvement in the overall development of rural economy.  She appreciated the pioneering role played by NABARD in micro finance, financial inclusion, rural infrastructure, producers, organisation, watershed, et cetera. The State government has taken several initiatives in Dakshina Kannada district with the help of NABARD, she added.

She called upon bankers to focus on financing MSMEs, agro processing and lending to poor women through group mode.  BIRD Joint Director Kamakshi S Pai said  BIRD has so far trained more than 50,000 officers from various banks, NGOs and government officers from southern states, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat covering 40 themes. A number of innovative practices have been implemented in the district and bankers from various states, including north-east as also SAARC countries, have been given an exposure by BIRD, she noted.

 BIRD has been constantly designing and innovating new training programmes, keeping in view the emerging challenges faced by the banking sector.
