Mangalore Today News Network

Beltangady, May 10, 2013:  A large number of dead fish were found on the banks of rivulet Somavati, a tributary of river Phalguni, at Laila near here on Thursday, May 9 morning.

Suspicions arose about possible foul play since water is being sourced from this rivulet for drinking purposes all over town. The water supply to the entire town and surroundings was immediately stopped up to avoid health hazards. Later it came to light that explosives were used by some persons to kill fish for a catch.

Although it is banned, in sheltered areas of river basins, explosives with gunpowder are used to kill and catch fish. The contaminated water of the river was first emptied and then the supply was restored in the afternoon.

Three persons who had used the explosives were tracked down. They have been identified as Suresh and Shekhar who were said to be hailing from Tamil Nadu and working in Vittal in Bantwal taluk and Ramkumar, currently residing near Raghavendra Math in Laila near here.
They have been arrested by the town police.
