People in Belthangady and Sullia suffered heavy losses owing to the fierce storms that struck the regions in the afternoon of October 12, Monday.
Four residents of Sullia sustained injuries when lightening struck their houses. Owing to the stormy winds, electric poles and trees were uprooted and buildings were damaged.
A large tree fell across Dharmasthala Road in Belthangady, blocking traffic at a stretch of 4 kms for nearly 2 hours. The traffic jam cleared only when the tree was removed with a crane in the evening.
About 2,000 tiles of Bhoruka Siri Rural Excellence Center in Laila village, Belthangady were blown away by the stormy winds. The training sessions were immediately cancelled and the center suffered an estimated loss of Rs. 1 lakh.
A godown belonging to the Food and Civil Supplies Department in Laila was damaged and food grains worth lakhs were destroyed in the rains.
Many other buildings in Laila, including the government pre-university college, were damaged because of large trees falling over them.
