Book throwing light on Barakuru to be released on Friday

Udupi, Feb 7, 2017: A book in English throwing light on the history and culture of Barakuru town in Udupi district will be among 15 books to be released by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy at the same time here on Friday.

The book, “Barakuru: A metropolitan city of antiquity, its history and culture”, is based on the Ph.D thesis of late B. Vasanth Shetty, according to B. Chandrahasa Rai, registrar of the academy.

Mr. Shetty was the head of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at SMS College in Brahmavar. He was also the principal of the same college till his death in 1997.

Another book, “Spirit possession and other stories”, which is translated into English from the original Kannada work of Muddu Moodubelle, will also be released. It has been translated by S.N.D. Poojary.

Continuing the publications under the “Madepparavandi Tuluver” (Unforgettable Tuluvas) series, four Tulu books would be released. They will be on Ananda Shetty, a Tulu activist, Kayyara Kinnanha Rai, freedom fighter and writer, Ammembala Balappa, a freedom fighter, and K.N. Taylor, a Tulu theatre actor.

With the release of four more books on Friday, the number of books released under the series would go up to 54.

In addition, seven Kannada books written under a grant of fellowship from the academy would be released. Its authors have been given Rs. 46,000 each and their guides will get Rs. 4,000 each. Some of the books among them include Tulu Cinema Adhyayana by Aravinda Bejai, Tulu Thittu Yakshagana by Yogish Kairodi, Tuluvara Krushi, Aaradhana Samskriti, Pookare Aacharane by Harish Alva M.G., Tulu Janapada Sahitya Shikshana by Sundara Kenaje, Aithihyagalu Kattikoduva Tulunadina Ithihasa by Dhananjaya Kumble, and Tulunadina Samskritiyalli Nalke Yane Ajila Janangada Patra by Lokayya Shishila.

The academy will also release a Tulu drama titled Mari Gidappule by Manu Idya and another Tulu book Kayyarena Kabitelu by Manu Idya.

The three-year term of the president of the academy M. Janaki Brahmavar and its members would come to an end on February 26.
