Mangauru, Jan 20, 2016: Forest Department officials have shifted a cage kept at Adyar to Jeppinamogaru here to catch a wild animal, suspected to be a hyena, reportedly moving on the outer periphery of the city since the past fortnight.
According to P. Sridhar, Range Forest Officer, Mangaluru, people in the Adyar area reported a fortnight ago that they had sighted a wild animal there. As dogs of some houses, at least in eight, in the Adyar area went missing, the wild animal moving around was suspected to be a hyena. Hence, the Forest Department kept a cage there a week ago to catch the animal but to no avail. Meanwhile, some citizens called the Mangaluru Rural Police Station on Monday and said that they sighted a leopard in the Jeppinamogaru area. However, it is suspected that the hyena spotted in Adyar could have moved to the nearby Jeppinamogaru area. Thus, the cage was shifted to Jeppinamogaru on Tuesday.
Mr. Sridhar said that based on information provided by people two leopards are suspected to be moving about on the outskirts of the city. A leopard is suspected to be moving about in the Kalinjimale (near Vitla), Mudipu, Konaje and Kurnad belt. Kalinjimale is a reserve forest spread over 3,000 acres. It is spread out on a long patch.
Another leopard is suspected to be moving around in the Kallamundkur, Kinnigoli, Badaga Ekkar, Adyapadi and Bajpe belt. Kallamundkur reserve forest is spread over 500 acres. Earlier, the Forest Department officials had kept cages at different places to catch them. But the animals gave them the slip.
