Mangaluru: The first exhibition-cum-sale of Islamic calligraphy was held at Bearys Valencia Nov 8, attracted a large numbers of visitors who appreciated the various typefaces of the ancient art. The calligraphy of ’Jeli Thuluth’ and ’Naskh’ scripts with verses from Quran, Hadis, proverbs in Arabic and Urdu drawn on parchments adorned the walls of the exhibition hall. Titled ’Islamic calligraphy - a divine art’ held in Mangaluru under the aegis of Institute of Indo-Islamic Art and Culture (IIIAC) opened a window to the world of Islamic calligraphy.
Calligraphy is an art which involves the coordination of the brain, eyes and hands. It combines knowledge with skill. Calligraphy is flourishing not only in Islamic nations, but also in Western and European countries.
IIIAC principal and chief calligrapher Ustad Muqtar Ahmed taught over 50 students and enthusiasts who took part in the seven-day crash course on Islamic calligraphy. Ahmed told media that the workshop and exhibition on calligraphy has received enormous response from people of Mangaluru.
