Central government focuses on health and education for all: Narayanaswamy

Mangalore, May 31:  V. Narayanaswamy, the minister of state for culture, planning, and parliamentary affairs, informed press people on Sunday that the union government aims to reduce below poverty line (BPL) families from 37.5 percent to 27.5 percent. He had arrived in Mangalore to participate in a programme organized by the Bawa Foundation to distribute free books to school children. The minister distributed free notebooks to more than 250 school children at Al-Badriya Composite PU College.


Mr. Narayanasamy further said that the union government planned to reduce BPL families by enacting the Food Security Bill. The minister claimed that 14 central sponsored schemes were implemented 70 percent, owing to the efforts of the monitoring committee led by the prime minister.  


Admitting the existence of corruption in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the minister said that greater vigil must be maintained to avoid corruption.  


Maintaining that the center’s main concerns were health and education, he said that the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dream of providing education and healthcare for everybody. The minister informed that the government has invested Rs 25,000 crore on infrastructure for primary and secondary education.  


He stressed the importance of private organizations, voluntary groups, and charitable institutions in providing quality education to everybody. The country, which has only 350 universities, actually needs 1,850 universities.
