Chicken price falls by 20 – 30 percent in Mangalore

Chicken price falls by 20 – 30 percent in Mangalore

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, nov 13, 2012: The avian flu scare has led to a 20 – 30 percent drop in the price of chicken in spite of the fact that no case of avian flu has been reported from Mangalore.

Lester D’Souza, managing partner of Souza Hatcheries, prices of chicken began falling 20 days back and the rates have not yet gone up. However, things are now getting better as the prices are slowly climbing up.

DK Hotel Owners’ Association Vice President Ahmed Fakruddin said that hotels cannot reduce price of chicken dishes because of the fluctuating prices. Another factor contributing to the fall in chicken prices is Diwali as Hindus eat only vegetarian food for one week.

Stating that chicken prices fall annually during Diwali season, Lester D’Souza said that this year they began falling 20 days in advance because of the avian flu scare.

Stating that the avian flu scare is only one of the factors responsible for the fall in chicken prices, Norbert Crasta, a Kadri-based poultry retailer, said that people are just not purchasing chicken like last year and that this has been happening since October. He said that demand for chicken has not gone up even when the prices have fallen.

Hoteliers in the meantime are making merry. A hotel owner said that they will not reduce prices of chicken dishes because they had a bad time with price hike last year and did not raise prices then.
