Mangalore Today News Network

Manipal, July 18, 2014:  After the recent Parkala incident a  huge hole has developed  without warning in an agricultural field in Herga village near Manipal, creating anxiety among people. A trench has developed and land has caved in,  in the field belonging to Jayaram Thanthri at Murakathadi and the pit is 12 feet deep. The agricultural  field was filled with water on Sunday for transplanting paddy saplings, when the pit was found.

Manipal Institute of Technology Professor Uday Shankar said such pits are formed by the river side during flood due to water logging on land. Connection between the formation of pit and the incident in Kelaparkala and Manchikere are possible, he said. There was flow of water from the land surface in Kelaparkala  during the recent summer and earth manifested cracks in Manchikere.
