Civil aviation ministry issues safety recommendations for AAI

Mangalore, June 21, 2012: The Ministry of Civil Aviation released some more recommendations related to the Mangalore plane crash of May 22, 2010, which killed 158 people, directing Air India (AI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to make air travel safe and secure for passengers.

The ministry recommends provision for runway end safety area (RESA), stricter regulations for the issue of Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorization (FATA) licenses, compliance with requirements for airport structures such as antenna.

The ministry has recommended that the AAI must conduct objective evaluation to make sure that every airport has a RESA. It also took AAI to task for not conducting an evaluation of the type of rescue and fire fighting (RFF) vehicle at Mangalore Airport.

According to the ministry, an effective aerodrome emergency exercise would have indicated various problems, enabling the AAI to take suitable action. It urged the AAI to make sure that similar exercises are conducted to ensure preparedness in case of emergency situation.
