Mangalore, Jun 14: Coast Guards Commandant Padam Shekhar Jha told reporters on June 13, Sunday that the Coast Guards of Karnataka will be soon provided an airbase on 15.21 acres of land in Bajpe for preliminary operations, adding that the airbase will require an addition 25 – 30 acres of land.
Chetak helicopters and Dornier aircraft will then be always available to launch rescue operations when vessels are caught in storms. The Arabian Sea becomes very rough and dangerous during the monsoons and many vessels get stranded. An airbase will not only save the lives of Coast Guards who have launched the rescue operation, but also the lives of fishing crew stranded at sea.
